How to prepare for GATE AEROSPACE 2020

Around 5000 students appear for GATE AEROSPACE (CODE – AE) exam every year. We can expect somewhat same number of students appearing for GATE AEROSPACE 2020. Out of these number of students around 1000 people will qualify the exam, but to secure admissions in IISc and IITs 60+ marks are needed. Although marks needed to get admission in M.Tech are different than marks required for M.S. or direct PhD. In this document we will discuss about how to schedule your preparation to secure more than 60 marks in exams.

So before starting your preparation always keep in mind what you are preparing for.

Cut – off marks for GATE AEROSPACE 2019 was

  • 33.5/100 marks for General
  • 30.2/100 marks for OBC/NCL
  • 22.3/100 marks for SC/ST/PwD

Securing above marks you will be qualifying the exam but it’s very difficult to get admissions into IISc and IITs. Usually 55 marks will give you around AIR – 100 with a score of 600 – 620. AIR – 1 in GATE AEROSPACE 2019 scored around 79 marks.

So when you are starting your preparation for GATE AEROSPACE 2020, have a target in your mind. If you are really looking for M.Tech in AEROSPACE and MECHANICAL stream in IISc & IITs, than your target should be definitely above 60. Although it looks like a challenging task to score such marks in national level exam but scoring these marks in GATE AEROSPACE is not so complicated. Reading further you will come to know that scheduling your preparation properly, reading correct material and practicing good questions will make this task easy.

Good, smart preparation can lead you to prepare well in very short time. All GATE preparation needs is understanding of basics and practicing relevant questions. Reading complete Text books and solving lengthy questions may not end up with good preparation. Although reading books always helps but it depends how much time we have.

Follow these simple steps to keep on track:

Step I:Make your approach topic wise. Don’t see your complete GATE AEROSPACE syllabus as a whole and try to break down into topics. So start with topics which carries more marks and focus on them first. E.g.: Vibration in Structures carries around 10 marks, whereas Columns carries 2 marks, so start with Vibration first.

Finish your notes and material which is directly focussing on GATE syllabus (Don’t read complete books and don’t follow all NPTEL lectures from scratch). The motive here is to be familiar with the GATE AEROSPACE syllabus.

Good GATE AEROSPACE STUDY MATERIAL or may be your B.Tech class notes will help. Find link below for your reference.

Let’s take an example: I’ll start with Vibration, and try to finish all theory and may be numericals from standard books. Don’t spend much time in solving numericals for now. That will come in later stage.

Step II:Once I know all the theory, formulae and important points for the topic, the next step is to solve all GATE AEROSPACE previous year exam problems of that topic (eg. Solve all vibration problems asked in GATE AEROSPACE till date). It is always good if previous year GATE questions are added in your GATEB AEROSPACE Test series topic wise. This will save your time in searching questions for that particular topic and you can directly start solving questions.

With this we will have complete idea of what they are asking and till what level we need to study the topics (Depth). Prepare a separate note book for exam solutions. This will help you during last phase of your preparation.

Step III: Once we are done with Step I & II. Next step is to solve more objective and Numerical answer type questions, which is currently the pattern in GATE exam.

Good GATE AEROSPACE ONLINE TEST SERIES will help you in this. Find link below for your reference.

https://www.goodwillgate2iit.com/online-test-series.html

So finish all topic wise tests and prepare solution for all. This will give you a fair idea about where you stand now in this topic.

NOTE: Make sure for solving any questions, use GATE Virtual calculator. It should be part of your Test series portal. This will help you in increasing your speed and accuracy which is major thing in any competitive exam.

Step IV:So, if we are very much confident with the topic now we have done in all steps above. Repeat this for next topic. May be start with Jet Propulsion (around 8 – 10 marks)

But if we found some difficulty, or not able to solve all exam problems or test series questions, next step is to read book for that particular topic you are weak in. This doesn’t mean start reading complete S.S.Rao or Thompson for Vibrations. Identify the topic you were having difficulty with (eg: Finding mode shapes or logarithmic decrement), read about that topic. Try numericals again and move forward.

Once this is done, now we can wrap up this topic for time being and move to next topic and start from Step – I

Step V: Once we are done with all topics in a particular subject. For e.g.:

Structures –

  1. Basic Elasticity
  2. Bending
  3. Torsion
  4. Columns
  5. Theory of failures
  6. Vibrations

Now practice Subject wise tests from your GATE AEROSPACE ONLINE TEST SERIES. This will prepare us well and we can close this subject now. Try to do this for all GATE AEROSPACE subjects.

Step VI:Once all subjects are done, it’s time to appear for FULL MOCK EXAMS or PRE-GATE Exams from your TEST SERIES. This part is very important, as it helps you to come out of any one subject mode and bring you in actual GATE format mode. So one question from structures, next from flight mechanics, next from Space mechanics and then may be Maths. This will help you to switch your mind from one subject to another.

Also another important aspect is to keep track of time taken. This will give you an idea how much time you are taking in solving the paper and also which approach to follow. Should I start from question no. 1 carrying 1 mark each, or should I start with questions no. 26 carrying 2 marks each, or should I start with aptitude.

We will have a separate document about

  • Time management
  • Approach to follow during GATE exam
  • Which book to read topic wise
  • Detailed GATE AEROSPACE syllabus
  • How to prepare for MATHS and Aptitude
  • Cut – off marks required for M.Tech/M.S./direct PhD/Prime minister research fellowship
  • Should I read more books or practice more numercials
